Did you know that guinea pigs can suffer from hyperthyroidism, too? Although they aren’t our most common patients, Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center is licensed to treat guinea pigs as well.

Signs of hyperthyroidism in guinea pigs are similar to those of hyperthyroid cats, including hyperactivity, a palpably enlarged thyroid gland, weight loss, and increased appetite. Although the disease can be more challenging to diagnose in guinea pigs, if there are clinical signs and a thyroid level over 5.2 mg/dl, treatment with I131 may be warranted.

If you are a veterinarian with a hyperthyroid guinea pig patient, feel free to contact us for more information about I131 treatment.
